From living rooms to record stores, people are finding interesting places to listen to live music or have a party. So what are the newest and coolest party venues? Museums.
Long known as stale and boring places, museums are finding new ways to engage with the public. In recent years museum parties have grown in popularity from Paris to New York to San Francisco. All over the world museums have been hosting parties as a way to expose their collections and exhibitions to a crowd that otherwise may never have come through their doors.
This trend hasn’t been ignored in Canada. The Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, the Art Gallery of Alberta in Edmonton, and the Canadian Museum of Nature in Ottawa all host their own series of ongoing parties that blend culture, music, and fun.
This past weekend our team checked out the Museum of Nature’s monthly party called Nature Nocturne which has been going strong since its inception in January 2013 with long lineups and sellout crowds.
The theme for this month’s event was “Invisible- Discover a hidden world as the invisible become visible”. From the exhibits on dinosaurs and the arctic to the packed dance floor, Nocturne wasn’t your usual party. There were the usual party staples- drinks, loud music and dancing- but the exhibits provided a fairly quiet refuge where you could get away and exercise your mind.
Overall, this one of the best after dark experiences we’ve had in a while. It had culture. It had fun. It had energy. It had elegance and class. If you’re in the Ottawa area from November through to April you won’t want to miss Nature Nocturne.
