Today we learned that The Black Academy founders, Shamier Anderson and Stephan James, will host the first annual Legacy Awards.

Just over a year after the first annual Legacy Awards were announced, today we learned that The Black Academy founders, Shamier Anderson and Stephan James, will be hosting the live ceremony. The brothers from Scarborough are also the executive producers for the show.

The festivities will include performances from some of Canada’s leading Black entertainers, including Jully Black, Deborah Cox, Keysha Freshh; Izzy-S, Kardinal Offishall, SATE, Savannah Ré, and DJ 4KORNERS.

Meanwhile, presenters are set to include Arisa Cox, Brandon Gonez, Kathleen Newman-Bremang, Amanda Parris, and Odario Williams. The full list of award recipients, performers, and presenters as well as public ticket information will be announced in the coming weeks.

Fans can get in on the action by voting for the winner of The Legacy Awards Digital Creator Fan Choice Award. Voting reopens on September 6 and closes Friday, September 23. For information on voting visit vote.blackacademy.ca.

Considered the first major Canadian award show to celebrate and showcase Black talent, The Legacy Awards comes at a time when Canadian Black talent has never been more in demand, from music to Hollywood. For showrunner, David F. Mewa, this is an opportunity to only inspire Black Canadians, but Canadians at-large.

“Putting together this celebration of Black Canadian talent is a labour of love and I’m honoured to have been invited to helm this epic undertaking,” Mewa explains. “A ton of care and thought has gone into creating the inaugural edition of The Legacy Awards and I think Canadians will be very inspired by what they see. It’s going to be seismic.”

The Legacy Awards air on CBC and CBC Gem on Sunday, September 25, 2022 at 8 p.m. (9 p.m. AT/9:30 p.m. NT) live from HISTORY in downtown Toronto.
