Now it’s Spencer’s turn to deal with his grief. Meanwhile, Jordan leads his team. Here’s our All American season 5 episode 15 recap.

Tonight is Spencer’s turn to grieve.

The episode opens with Spencer running. We hear his voice talking about outrunning demons hiding from truth and all his feelings. Spencer is then seen back in his Crenshaw home with his phone, a reminder of the voicemail. Spencer is realizing he has to face what’s going on.

While eating breakfast, Dillon is looking forward to Spencer taking him to an art show but when juice spills on Spencer’s phone, Spence snaps on Dillon, then on D’Angelo and then his mama. Grace is tired of his behaviour and orders him to therapy with Dr Spears. Of course Spencer is not feeling it.

Jordan leads his way

At GAU, Jordan is seen running plays with a senior wide receiver, Evan, who is not catching any of the passes but is carrying on like he did something. Jordan tries to correct him, yelling at him and a fight breaks out. Later, Jordan talks to Coach Kenny and Kenny reminds him he’s a leader but to lead his way. He organizes a touchdown celebration dance-off to help lift the team who’s still down about Coach. It works and the team is playing better. He was reminded by his twin to never give up on people including the team.

JJ has grown

JJ is back. When Asher questions him about where he’s been he says he was giving people space. He explains that being drunk at the repast was not about him partying but about him numbing the pain from Coach Baker’s passing. He tells Asher he’s ready to focus on football again. We get to see this focused JJ later at the team meeting where he keeps finishing Asher’s sentences, showing he’s been paying attention to what’s been happening with college teams. He’s later met with his frat brothers who try to remind him of his partying ways and JJ resists the temptation. Jabari encourages him to keep up the good work.

Layla warns Chelsea

Layla tells Chelsea about Miko’s flower delivery to the house. She’s warns her to keep away and focus on the music however the views on the music video are terrible. Chelsea can’t understand why the trailer did so well and the video didn’t, but of course it has to do with Miko pushing it on her main fan account. Patience is ready to thank Miko again and Layla warns her to stay away reminding her of what happened with Carrie. Patience has a visit with Miko anyway and tells her that there need to be some boundaries. Miko scolds herself and Patience says it’s okay but when Patience steps away to take a photo with some fans, Miko gets an idea.

Spencer’s road to recovery

With Spencer back at the beach house after breakfast, he’s met with Asher who picks up on his mood. When JJ gets all excited about the potential of Coach Baker’s boys reuniting at GAU, Asher catches Spencer’s attitude shift and ushers JJ out of the house. Dr Spears shows up hoping to check on him and maybe set up a time to talk, but Spencer is very defensive and kicks him out.

Spence then heads to GAU to request a recommendation letter from Coach Kenny so he can transfer. When Spencer tries to demand the letter, Kenny puts him in his place reminding him who’s the adult. Spears then pops up at school. Tension and anger continue to build in Spencer as he pushes Dr Spears further away. He tells Spencer that he will run out of hiding places and to find him when he does.

Back at the beach house, Coop brings Dillon by so they could go out but Dillon brings up the breakfast behaviour and Spence just wants everyone to leave him alone. Coop sends Dillon away to talk to Spence and tells him she is worried. Coop tries to tell him how he’s acting and Spencer screams at her and punches a cabinet breaking it. Dillon comes in and is spooked. Coop is also scared and says she’s taking Dillon because she doesn’t trust Spence with him. Spencer is left stunned. He calls Dr Spears and then they go for a drive.

Dr Spears and Spencer end up in Crenshaw at his favourite childhood park. When asked why he reached out, Spence tells him about what happened with Dillon.

Coop shows up at the Baker’s house where she’s telling Liv and Jordan about Spencer. Olivia is of course worried and says those that are closest to him, especially Alicia, should be there for him and not abandon him. Olivia can’t believe that everyone is leaving him and is adamant that everyone needs to stand with him. Later, Olivia talks to Alicia, saying that she’s probably the closest to him who can save him.

Back in Crenshaw, as Spencer and Dr Spears continue walking in the park, Spencer gets a call from Coach Kenny and doesn’t answer it. Dr Spears questions why he didn’t let it go to voicemail. With some pushing, Spencer is confronted by what he’s been running from. Spears later asks him why he feels people choose to leave him. He knows mentally that all the people ‘leaving’ have their reasons but he can’t stop the voice in his head telling him nobody wants to stick around. Spencer learns that Shawn, his dad, and Billy each left him with a gift. It’s the first time Spencer smiles and the weight has clearly begun to lift.

Spencer calls Coach Baker’s phone and leaves a message telling him how much he misses him. Coach Kenny returns with the letter and is met with an apologetic Spencer. Kenny reminds him that he’s not going anywhere and then takes him to his childhood home where more friends and family are waiting to embrace him. Darnell makes an appearance and Spencer confesses to him he’s not okay but is working on it. Darnell shares that it was Olivia who brought the whole group together. Spencer is surprised but clearly happy and wants to have that conversation but before he can start,  in walks Alicia.
