After a year and three months away, Olivia reunites with Spencer, who is feeling the pressure as the face of GAU football, and the Vortex. Here’s our All American season 6 episode 1 recap.

It’s been a long time but we’re back with the first review of Season 6 Episode 1 of All American. We left off with Olivia headed to London, Spencer confessing his love for her, Jordan and Layla getting engaged and Patience being stabbed. The premiere takes place a year and three months in the future and a lot has changed.

GAU’s comeback

We find Spencer dominating on the field with a rejuvenated GAU team. Media is swirling about how explosive Spencer’s game has become and in true Spencer fashion, he’s trying to share the spotlight with his QB, Jordan, but a journalist politely brushes him off. Jordan struggles with not being in the spotlight, but he’s busy planning his wedding although it’s two years away. Coach Kenny and President of GAU, Dr Gutenburg are focused on rebuilding the reputation of GAU with Spencer and Jordan at the centre but ideologies seem to clash.

Asher’s family

The beach house has a brand new member who’s causing big changes for Coach Asher and girlfriend Jaymee (who’s started a new corporate gig). Baby AJ is keeping his mom, dad and uncles on their toes with baby life and Asher soon sees that managing coaching and parenthood is the new challenge ahead. He starts to see that he has people around him willing to help on his new journey. We later learn that JJ has gone on a soul searching mission to Tebet so looks like we won’t get to see uncle JJ after all.

Layla’s new lounge

Layla has opened a new lounge in Crenshaw a reimagined Slauson Cafe, with her new millionaire business partner. He’s young, he’s experienced and likes to mention his money but he’s also concerned about Layla who’s battling her concern for Patience returning to the stage amidst some disturbing news about her case against Miko. Patience swears she’s moving forward and isn’t bothered but her performance leaves her fans questioning her readiness. Layla’s stress levels reach an all time high and her relationship with Patience is questioned.

Coop’s in love

Coop is the perfect friend this episode. While she hasn’t made a certain love confession to Patience yet, she’s been rooting for her and is worried about her and the case against Miko. To her best friend Spencer, she’s supportive and helps him come to terms with his thoughts as he prepares to welcome his girl home.

Spelivia’s love

Meanwhile, Spencer is a ball of stress and anxiety. He’s grown so much over the year and is nervous to welcome back Olivia who decided to stay in London beyond her initial three month internship. He’s worried that things won’t be the same between them but still manages to plan a surprise welcome home party for her.

Liv comes as the biggest surprise arriving early with a whole new look and outlook on her life. She’s changed and has learned to embrace her new self and all of what that means, but her love for Spencer remains constant and the two share an honest conversation and sweet reunion.

(It was also good to see Coach Montes in this episode)
This episode was everything we needed it to be and a great kick off to the season.

All American Mondays at 8pm on The CW.
