It’s showcase day and it’s KJ and Khalil’s last chance to show out in front of the Division 1 coaches. Here’s our All American Season 8 Episode 12 recap.
Coop’s side quest
Coop and Amina head to Preach’s favorite restaurant to get him some food, and to give him a little space after his release. Amina is concerned that she has come between Breonna and Coop’s relationship. She warmed up to her after she helped with Preach’s release.
Later, Coop goes to prison to visit Miss Scott, aka Shawn’s mom. Coop hopes to one day get her out. Miss Scott, in turn, hopes Coop has someone to share her life with.
Amina returns to South Crenshaw
While walking the halls of South Crenshaw, Amina has flashbacks about the ICE raids. The classroom is still in disarray. She runs into Coach Shepard who helps her to realize that what happened with ICE was a good thing. She did a remarkable thing. Amina lets coach know that Jordan missed the showcase because Liv went into labor, and that Khalil, the “knucklehead”, missed it in order to help Liv when she went into labor. He has a change of heart and decides to show up at the showcase to coach his team in Jordan’s absence.
KJ and Khalil ball out
It’s showcase day and Khalil still hasn’t stepped foot on the field. He even has some interest from Coach Kenny and Golden Angeles University. With KJ trying to hold things together, the coach wants to know how bad he wants this. Khalil is concerned too with KJ avoiding getting on the field. It looks like KJ is feeling some pressure.
At the showcase, KJ and Khalil are going back and forth, touchdown for touchdown.
Back on the field, Coach Shephard has a plan to show what Khalil is capable of—that’s before an on field accident which changes the mood.
Tori forgives
Before KJ hits the field with his team, Tori wants to talk. She’s not upset anymore. Her feelings were hurt and she misses their friendship. She wants him to go after what he wants, even if that’s Amina.
Later, at Beverly, Tori bumps into Amina and asks how her father is doing. Amina wants to apologize, but Tori isn’t having it. She wants the focus to stay on Preach. They decide to sit together in the stands which has KJ and Khalil confused.
You get an offer”, “You get an offer”.
Coach Kenny has a conversation with KJ in the changeroom and asks him when he first fell in love with football leading to a nice flashback to when he was five years old. It’s a reference from the movie Brown Sugar and a nod to Taye Diggs reference. Coach Kenny and GAU may have an offer that KJ can’t refuse. He’s Impressed that KJ made sure that every player got their chance to shine on showcase day.
Meanwhile, Coach Shepard is impressed with Khalil’s sportsmanship, snd so is one of the D1 coaches.
Cassius is proud of KJ, but KJ finally realizes that Cassius won’t be his coach for senior year. Cassius promises that he’ll always be his coach. It’s a nice father-son moment.
Spencer and Liv 2.0
The episode ends with a long overdue honest conversation between KJ and Amina. Finally, It’s a full circle moment from their first interaction on the beach when they first met.
Final thoughts
Well, after a number of weeks, we finally got through the showcase. The writer did a good job of using the showcase to delay Daniel Ezra’s return.
There were some great feel good moments between KJ and Tori, KJ and Khalil, KJ and Cassius, and KJ and Amina. This episode really brought KJ, Khalil, and Amina full circle, although I’m sure there will be even more close to their stories on the series finale. Coop also had a nice full circle moment visiting Shawn’s mother in prison.
Get your tissue boxes ready because with Daniel Ezra returning next episode for the twins’ birth, and the series finale, this is going to be a sad yet happy moment for fans who have been following since Day 1.
