This past weekend marked the 2018 edition of Ottawa Comiccon, the premiere pop culture fan event in Canada’s capital. Over 40,000 visitors attended the event, now in its seventh year, to take in the best of comics, movies, TV horror sci-fi, video games toys and manga in over 120,000 square feet of space at the EY Centre.
Not typically known as a celebrity hotspot, Ottawa attracted an impressive list of celebrity guests including Justice League, Game of Thrones and Conan The Barbarian star Jason Momoa, and Finn Jones of Iron Fist and Game of Thrones, Matt Smith of Dr. Who, Brent Spiner who played Data on Star Trek: The Next Generation, and sci-fi vet Karl Urban, who all posed for pictures and signed autographs for adoring fans.
Urban said of his visit to Ottawa, “It’s great to be back in your beautiful city at this time of year!”, said Karl Urban.
Other guests included Bruce Boxleitner (Tron: Uprising), Jewel Staite (Serenity), Joe Flanigan (Stargate: Atlantis) and Megan Follows (Anne of Green Gables).
Unfortunately, Mike Colter, the star of Marvel’s Luke Cage, was unable to attend do to a scheduling conflict.
And then there was the cosplay. Italian cosplay legend Leon Chiro modelled costumes from major videogame franchises Assassin’s Creed, Final Fantasy XV, and Devil May Cry, while the annual Masquerade contest showed off the creativity and imagination of cosplayers from near and far.
There was even something for the gamers. Comiccon partner, DreamHack, the world’s largest computer festival, hosted the DreamHack Gaming Zone, featuring daily tournaments, retro gaming consoles, and a VR station in collaboration with HTC Vive.
In total there were over 75 entertainment activities for the whole family, from Q&A’s and board game tournaments, to film screenings, autograph sessions and photo ops.
