Khalil faces his family issues, meanwhile showcase day continues at Beverly high school. Here’s our All American Season 8 Episode 9 recap.
The Showcase continues
Showcase day continues. The episode opens with Jordan and Cassius storming into the Baker house wanting to know where the ambulance took Liv. Unfortunately, no one can reach Spencer, not even his agent.
KJ is concerned that Khalil hasn’t arrived at the showcase, and Cassius is nowhere to be seen. He’s concerned that Cliff is up to something.
Marquis explains everything
Khalil is distraught until his dad comes in wondering why Khalil isn’t at the showcase. He comforts Khalil and helps him clean up the Baker house. When Kahlil’s mom calls his dad, he wonders what’s going on between them. Marquis? Wants to know if he’s willing to give her a chance. He wants to know why she didn’t want to be in his life.
Marquis finally sits down with Khalil and gives him his mom’s background story. Unfortunately, Khalil is still upset about recent disappointments from his mother. Marquis admits he didn’t make it easy for Khalil’s mom to stay because of his lifestyle.
Marquis and Khalil share a great moment as he tells him stories from when he was a baby. Marquis learned to forgive Tash by watching Khalil.
Coop’s identity crisis
Coop and Amina arrive at home, but Amina can’t stop thinking about her dad after seeing him in custody. They decide to have a hangout session to get their minds off of Preach, but it’s interrupted when journalists show up at their front door to ask questions about Preach’s detainment. Coop regrets missing her call during the ICE raid and being a sellout to her community.
Later, Breonna comes over and her and Coop have a well-needed conversation. Breonna wants to know why she couldn’t stay at the law firm J&R while she figured out the direction of her law career. Coop tries to explain why she snapped at Breonna after the ICE raids.
Meanwhile, Coop and Breonna are having a hard conversation. She believes Coop blames her for the fact she wasn’t there for Amina and Preach during the ICE raids. She also believes there’s a fight happening inside her between who she was and who she wants to be.
Later, Breonna returns to tell Coop the news about Liv.

Amina and Khalil’s friendship
Coop goes to check on Amina only to find out she snuck out to help KJ. After getting a text from KJ, she pulls up to the Baker house to find out why Khalil isn’t at the showcase.
Amina and Khalil have a vulnerable conversation and get back to being best friends. She admits that she misses him.
Jordan’s advice
When Khalil and Marquis arrive at the hospital, Jordan is happy to see him Khalil. He thanks Khalil for saving Liv’s life. Jordan advises Khalil to go to the showcase. He worked too hard for this opportunity. But before going to the showcase he decides to make a quick stop.
Final thoughts
The decision to have the last few episodes take place over one day is an interesting decision. Done incorrectly, it could feel slow and drawn out, but the past few episodes have been meaty and entertaining.
This episode was a send off for the character of Marquis, Khalil’s father. Terayle Hill, who plays Marquis, posted on Instagram that this was his final episode on All American. Over the past two seasons, Marquis has had a beautiful character arc. He started out being a hated character who tried to pull his son into the gangster life instead of pursuing a chance at a better life through football. It was because of him that Khalil went to go live at the Baker house in the first place. But the TV characters you love can sometimes become the characters you hate, and the characters you hate can become the characters you love. Marquis shows a lot of growth and maturity, leading to a beautiful father and son moment. Hill should be proud of what he did with the his character.
Something else to highlight is how much of a proper send off Coop is getting in the final season. She’s experiencing an interesting character arc as well and it’s not done. She’s not the person who she used to be, but she’s fighting the person she’s becoming. It will be interesting to see where she lands.
Finally, with Amina and Khalil back to being BFFs, the way is clear for Amina and KJ to become a thing. I look forward to seeing how things end for Spencer and Liv 2.0.
