Season Two of Run The Burbs will gain a little star power as Kardinal Offishall and Jully Black are set for guest appearances on the CBC comedy.
CBC and Pier 21 Films have announced that Canadian R&B and Hip-hop legends Kardinal Offishall and Jully Black are set to appear on an upcoming episode of the comedy series Run The Burbs.
Created by Kim’s Convenience star Andrew Phung and Scott Townend, Run The Burbs tells the story about life in the suburbs.
Offishall first appeared in the series premiere as a retired version of himself who settled in the suburbs as Phung’s neighhour. Now in season two he will reprise his role alongside Black who will also play herself. In the episode, Camille (Rakhee Morzaria) hosts a tasting donner for the Canadian music vets with hopes of securing a catering contract for an album release party.
With Black and Offishall together on screen, viewers can expect a lot of personality (and perhaps a lot of Patois and nods Jamaican culture).
For Phung, being able to cast Offishall and Black is a dream come true.
“From the beginning we made a list of dream castings. Somehow in season one we were able to get Kardinal for our premiere – for season two we’ve done it again and upped the ante with Canadian Icon Jully Black,” he explains. “I get giddy with excitement thinking about these two performers bringing the laughs in the world we created. They’re incredible and I can’t wait for audiences to see them like they’ve never seen them before.”
Offishall and Black rose to prominence in the late 90’s and early 2000’s Toronto Hip-hop and R&B scene which also gave rise to artists like Choclair, Saukrates, Baby Blue Sound, K-OS, and film and music video director Director X. The two previously collaborated on tracks like “Ol’ Time Killin'”, “Money Jane” and “Jeevin'”.
The roles on Run The Burbs are the latest in a series of accomplishments for the pair. Black is coming off the release of her latest album Three Rocks and a Slingshot while Offishall was recently announced as the new Global A&R for Def Jam.
The episode, titled “Phamily Budget”, airs February 8 at 8:30 p.m. ET (9 p.m. NT) on CBC Television and CBC Gem.
