3 EASY TIPS TO STAY WARM AND STYLISH THIS WINTER

We’re in the thick of winter and with it has come the same dilemma we face every winter. Should I dress warm and keep my favourite outfits in the back of the closet, or risk getting sick but stay classy? Well, who told you you had to choose? Here are three easy tips to stay warm and stylist this winter.

Tip #1: Choose the right fabrics

If you want to stay warm and comfortable which fabrics should you choose? I could write an entire article just about fabrics but to keep it simple, we can classify the different fabrics in two categories―the synthetic fibers (like polyester and acrylic) and the natural fibres, including plant-based fibers like cotton and the animal-based fibres. These kinds of fabrics are ideal for winter thanks to their breathability and insulation.

Among natural fibres, wool will be your best friend. In addition to keeping you warm, it will also absorb humidity. Out of all the different types of wool, I recommend Merino. For a bigger budget, you can also find mohair, alpaca, angora and cashmere wool, all loved for their softness. If you’re considering cashmere, there’s no need to always go for a 100% cashmere; mixed fabric garments will keep you warm and be more reasonable for the budget.

Silk is also a good choice. This luxurious textile is a non-conductor of heat. It will keep you warm in winter and cool during summer.

We don’t always think about it, but if you don’t live in a country with severe weather, leather can also do a good job. For example, a leather jacket, more specifically a Shearling jacket, is windproof. It’s also very trendy this season especially in Europe. But be careful, leather usually doesn’t like water or snow.

Tip #2: Use the layering technique

Using multiples layers of clothing will give your style more dimension. But be careful to not overdo it; you don’t need 10 layers. Now is the time to experiment and try new things. Play with different fabrics, textures and colours to make your outfit more interesting. To help you, here is some advice for the perfect layered outfit:

  1. Make sure your innermost layer is the thinnest. This will make it easy for you (in case of overheating) to take off a top layer.
  2. You want to add some contrast between your different layers. Alternate dark with light colours.
  3. In winter we like to use more neutral colours like different shades of grey and beige, but to add some spic to your outfit add one pop of colour. Maybe a coloured shirt.

Of course, layering is first and foremost to keep you warm. Each layer has its own function. Read this article about to know more about The 3 Layers System.

Tip #3: Remember, accessories are your friends

Not only will accessories keep you warm, but they will complete your outfit, showing your creativity.

A square printed oversized scarf, a colourful beanie, a beautiful pair of leather gloves, a pair of wool socks…these are examples of accessories you can incorporate into your wardrobe to keep you warm and stylish at the same time.

Depending on where you live, a pair of men’s wool winter tights worn underneath your pants is strongly recommended. Don’t worry, I’ll keep your secret.

I hope these three tips will help you to be warm while looking great this winter season.
