Neflix has bought the rights to an upcoming docuseries about polarizing music producer, rapper and clothing/shoe designer, Kanye West, who recently made headlines after his split with his wife, Kim Kardashian. The deal was initially rumoured to be worth $30 million although that has been refuted by sources and industry insiders.

The documentary was shot over 21 years by West’s previous collaborators Clarence “Coodie” Simmons and Chike Ozah who directed version three of West’s music video for “Jesus Walks”, as well as “Through the Wire”, shot after his nearly fatal car accident in 2002. It is said to include pivotal moments in West’s life, from the death of his mother to his failed presidential bid.

The duo’s previous work includes music videos for hip-hop and R&B stars, including Erykah Badu and Lupe Fiasco, as well as a 2019 documentary about basketball legend Stephon Marbury and a 2012 ESPN 30 for 30 documentary about Chicago high school basketball phenom Ben Wilson who was shot and murdered in 1984.

West is the latest addition to a growing list of celebrities inking docuseries deals in recent years, including Justin Bieber, August Alsina and more recently Demi Lovato. The yet to be named film is set to be released later this year.
