Ari Lennox’s new project is “equal parts soulful and sexy” says Kevin Bourne in his Ari Lennox age sex location album review.
Days after releasing a surprise EP titled Away Message, Ari Lennox has dropped her highly anticipated album age/sex/location. According to Wikipedia, the term is “used as a question to find out the age, sex, and general location of the person one is talking to.”
With that in mind, the album explores relationship dynamics ranging from sexuality and passion, to finding the strength to move on. It’s equal parts soulful and sexy as Lennox brings the raw and unfiltered emotion she’s known for to this project.
We see this on the intro track “POF” with its Erykah Badu-like vocals over a Love Jones soundtrack-esque instrumentation. We don’t know who she’s talking about, but clearly somebody pissed her off. The song is really about personal empowerment and moving on, especially when you’re made to feel you’re the problem.
This continues on the previously released single “Hoodie”. The production is so smooth it’s almost hypnotic and this sound re-emerges later in the album. The simplicity of the production provides the perfect backdrop for Lennox’s booming vocals, reminiscent of 90’s R&B.
While Lennox displays strength on some tracks, she also brings a sense of vulnerability on songs like “Mean Mug” where she exudes a healthy sense of desperation and urgency.
One of the sexiest songs on the whole album is “Stop By” which has a little bounce that will get your head nodding. On the track she encourages her love interest to “Stop by, baby, undress me”. Hot. Then the sexy vibes continue on “Boy Bye” featuring Lucky Daye. The chemistry between the two is palpable as they flirtatiously take jabs at each other, leaving us wanting more male-female R&B/soul duets which appear to be less and less common.
Rounding out the features on the album are the blazing hot Chloë on “Leak It” with a hint of 1960’s R&B harmonies and Summer Walker on the previously released “Queen Space”.
Overall, this album reinforces why Ari Lennox is one of the leading R&B/Soul artists in music today. Her content is universal and both her talent and this album are mind blowing and timeless. She is strong yet feminine, and extremely honest while not sounding like she’s trying to bash men. As a result, it’s an album both men and women can enjoy, whether individually or together. age/sex/location is one of the more enjoyable albums I’ve reviewed all year.
