Yesterday, thousands of music industry players, from record labels to music media, took to social media to express their support for Black Out Tuesday, an initiative set to take place on June 2nd in support the black community in their fight against racial inequality and injustice. Capitol Records, Columbia Records, Def Jam, Interscope, as well as the “Big Three” record labels of Universal Music Group, Sony Music, and Warner Music Group, have confirmed their participation. Companies as far as Canada, Brazil, Africa and Australia are also set to participate.
UMG, the largest music company in the world, stated on Instagram, “As gatekeepers of the culture, it’s our responsibility to not only come together to celebrate the wins, but also hold each other up during a loss.”
Meanwhile Capital Music made their own statement. “In solidarity with our Black colleagues, artists and loved ones across the country who are reeling from the senseless taking of another innocent Black life, Capitol Music Group will not be conducting any business on Tuesday, June 2 in observance of ‘Black Out Tuesday’.”
They also made a donation to Color of Change to advance the efforts of social and racial justice.
Hip-hop gatekeepers Karlie Hustle and Ebro Darden of Apple Music and Ebro In The Morning have also confirmed their participation.
