Fresh off his appearances on Sway’s Universe and CTV’s etalk, multi-award nominated and award winning Hip-Hop/Electronic artist Cody Coyote is prepared to share a message of hope with his new single “Debwe”. The title of this record translates to “Truth” in Ojibwe and focuses on an uplifting message for Indigenous people undergoing hardships due to intergenerational trauma, poverty, colonialism and day to day struggles. Cody Coyote stated that during the COVID-19 pandemic a lot of important discussions are happening and people are listening to Indigenous voices even more now, which he hopes to contribute to through music.
“Now is the time for us all to have the difficult, uncomfortable conversations that are often bypassed and to understand what it means to co-exist with one another. As someone whose family was directly affected by the 60’s Scoop, I acknowledge that I’m an intergenerational
survivor and with that I’ve had a cultural disconnect and faced numerous challenges which ultimately left me looking for hope in the darkest of times” said Cody Coyote. “Being able to utilize my language in my music is important to me as it is an act of resilience, reclamation and resurgence. My hopes with this new single is to display that healing is possible, that we as Indigenous people are capable of doing whatever we set our hearts to and that we will make it out of the struggles that we face in our lives”.
Coyote also released a summer-themed music video for the single filmed at the Pechanga Indian Reservation, California, USA, the homelands to the Pechanga Band of the Luiseño people, and was created in partnership with the California American Indian & Indigenous Film Festival (CAIIFF), California Indian Culture and Sovereignty Center, and Rez Classics Car Club. Directed by Frontman Media, the video features members of the Pechanga Band, some classic cars, and of course the California sun.
