Lil Berete has wasted no time following up on his acclaimed EP EURO STEP, with the release of a new EP ELECTRIC CITY. The Toronto rapper decided to take a different approach to his sound with this project, infusing Afropop and Electronic Music to create a very unique, yet euphonious sound. The Regent Park rapper collaborated with producers such as Kovi, Tyrus, Klein, Clvvdy and Tyler Murphy for the project, while the artist himself wrote the lyrics for all four songs. The rapper delivers another memorable project that keeps his hot streak in 2023 going strong.
On “ELECTRIC LOVE”, Berete creates a song that will certainly be played over and over again in parties across the world. The name is appropriate, as the beat is a silvery electronic sound that meshes so well with the artist’s melodic vocals. The mixture of the beat and his voice is almost hypnotic, and you can’t help but bob your head along to the song. It’s the kind of song that just sets the atmosphere at the club and makes the moment it comes on feel special.
On “DISCO LOVE”, he is able to use tropical beats mixed with sensual lyrics that strongly depict his yearning for his lover. The vocal production is stand out here, and the placement is prominent and forward rather than fading into the track, providing emphasis to what the rapper is trying to say. The track has a consistent pulse that highlights the depth and intensity of his yearning. It is a dance song without a doubt, but it is a love song as well.
“I DID” has a much faster-paced beat that matches the more emotional lyrics, with Lil Berete talking about the difficulty it took to get over his former lover over a very mellow background beat that somehow remains melodious enough that you end up finding yourself wanting to dance to it, even if in a reserved manner. Lil Berete continues to sound like his harmonious self and keeps proving how well his voice combined with electronic music.
The final song of the project, “THE TRUTH”, encapsulates all of what makes this project so pleasant-sounding. Lil Berete’s mellifluous voice continues to emanate an energy that is mesmerizing to the ear, with the up-beat and canorous production providing a solid foundation for the artist to do his thing and make this song flourish.
It is the end to a brilliant project that goes to show why the young artist was able to accumulate over 40 million streams in less than three years as an artist. The future looks bright for the rising star.
