Éz drops the video for “2CB”, an explosive blend of trap cuts and cinematic scenes that’s rooted in the Toronto rapper’s Columbian-Canadian roots. Read the song and video review by SHIFTER’s Rose Basu here.
The drill sub-genre of rap has risen in popularity since Pop Smoke entered the scene. Since then, many artists have chosen to do their own take on drill. Toronto based rapper Éz has recently joined in on this wave, and it’s greatly paid off for him.
“2CB ” is Éz’s first release of 2022 and comes just after the Boslen Gonzo Canadian Tour, which the Colombian-Canadian Éz participated in. The Canadian rap scene has rarely sees artists with a Spanish background, unlike the American scene which has greater diversity when it comes to Spanish artists. Éz is looking to change that narrative and bring his culture and ancestry to the Canadian rap game.
This topic is highlighted in the music video for “2CB”, directed by Marcel Mazzuca. There are multiple scenes to refresh the viewer and in one Éz is shown conversing with his mother in English. She then requests that he speak in Spanish. His mother then enforces that he is Latino, and that he should be proud of those roots. Éz seems hesitant, but his mother is recommending that he write and rap in Spanish. The visual accompaniment for this track then cuts his mother’s speech and flashes to Éz’s personal thoughts towards her monologue. He understands her perspective, yet still seems hesitant. Almost wondering if the Canadian hip-hop scene is ready for that. The video ends shortly after, leaving fans wondering if this could be alluding to new Spanish rap from Éz.
The track itself has come together perfectly. Éz’s voice seems to match many styles, including drill which not every rapper has the voice for. Approximately a quarter way through “2CB” he switches the flow to something darker and grimier. This was done very well for an artist who doesn’t often take on that style of rap. Toronto rap is often varied in sound with artists such as Pressa versus Bizz Loc. However, it does have a familiar sound to it. “2CB” has a sound which is targeted at those who might only think of Drake when they think of Toronto rap. There is a glimpse of an ode to Drake in the music video however. This hint is the fact that a Rolls Royce is shown throughout the video. Drake has famously said that he used a rental Rolls Royce to manifest his success in the early days of his career.
“2CB” has gained 50k streams since its release and has become one of Éz’s most viewed videos. This is an explosive start for Éz’s 2022 releases, and maybe some future ones will be in Spanish.
