PREVIEW – HAVIAH MIGHTY AT ORIGIN KITCHEN CONCERTS, MARCH 27

Tonight, the Origin Arts and Community Centre and the Great Canadian Theatre Company will close out International Women’s Month by presenting the latest installment of the Origin Kitchen Concerts featuring 2019 Polaris Prize winner Haviah Mighty.

The Toronto rapper is no stranger to performing in the capital. She previously performed a signature high energy show at House of Paint 2019 and last performed in Ottawa at last year’s Bluesfest Drive-in festival. Since then she has gone on to release popular singles like “Obeah”, “Antisocial” featuring Rhythm and Flow alumn Old ManSaxon, and more recently “Good On My Own Tonight” featuring fellow Toronto artist, TOBi.

Haviah Mighty is known for delivering a very polished yet in your face style of performance and we expect nothing less for her OKC set. She will be joined by local visual artists Fatuma Kou whose creations will be available for purchase in the month following the show.

The March 27th show is the first in a series of shows to be co-presented by the Origin Arts and Community Centre and the Great Canadian Theatre Company. Aside from the OKC series, the partnership also includes three stand-alone events as part of the GCTC’s 2021/22 season.

For GCTC’s artistic director, Eric Coates, the partnership is an overdue commitment to the Black community.

“We may have felt that we were doing a good job of being inclusive here in the past, but we were still making the programming decisions internally. This partnership brings Origin Arts into the building with an obligation only to their own impulse. It’s past time that we pay attention and I am enormously grateful to Jamaal, Jacqui and Captain for taking this step with us.”

The show begins tonight at 7:30pm. Tickets are available by a pick-your-price model with options ranging from $5, $15, $25, to $40. For more information or to purchase tickets visit gctc.ca.
