Murda Beatz looks the part of the somewhat quiet and introverted creator, so it would be easy to wonder what a one hour performance from one of the world’s hottest producers would look like. Well, he was anything but quiet. He even invited the crowd to make a mosh pit throughout his set, from beginning to end.
Murda’s performance was basically a DJ set where he alternated between the front of the stage, engaging with the crowd, and taking his place behind the DJ table. He played some of his biggest hits, including Drake’s “Portland” and “Nice For What”. He even played the Tekashi 6ix9ine and Nicki Minaj hit “FEFE” after saying it would be his last time playing the song and asking the crowd whether they “fuck with snitches”.
He also spun what seemed to be some of his favourite songs from different eras, including “Going Bad”, “No Limit”, “Gin and Juice”, and “Thotiana”, which generated the biggest crowd response of the night, and later “Money In The Grave”, “Beautiful Morning”, “Old Town Road”, “Follow Me”, “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and “Don’t Stop Believin'”. Not necessarily out of the ordinary for a kid from small town Fort Erie, Ontario. Murda’s hypeman used the legendary Journey track to encourage the crowd to chase their dreams, just as Murda has.
Overall, it wasn’t necessarily a stellar performance, but it didn’t need to be. In a sense, it was the complete opposite of the Logic show the night before. Whereas Logic tried to wow us with complexity and bars, and almost fell flat in delivering a memorable performance, Murda Beatz kept it simple. It was all about vibes and enjoying some of our favourite songs, and that’s all we needed.
