DOPE NEW MUSIC – BAKA NOT NICE, LIL BERETE, GARY BEALS

In this edition of Dope New Music, we look at new Canadian hiphop and R&B, as well as other genres, from artists like Baka Not Nice, Lola Bunz, Lil Berete, Gary Beals, Anaïs Cardot, EverythingOShauN, Private Name Private Number, and more.

BAKA NOT NICE | “Thinking About Drilling”

Fresh off his performance at the SiriusXM x Partynextdoor show last week, Baka Not Nice is back with a brand new single “Thinking About Drilling”. This comes after the April release of “Took A Trip”.

Where “Took A Trip” was more upbeat and raw, the new single is still raw but more melodic with a nice laid back bounce. It’s a nice track to vibe to if you’re chillin’ by yourself with your favourite drink or going on a late night drive through your city.

ANAÏS CARDOT  | “Colors”

Anaïs Cardot‘s new single “Colors” is so vibey. Together, the soft vocals, French lyrics, and acoustic guitar create a sense of beauty. It sounds like one of those classic French songs, think Édith Piaf’s “La vie en rose”, infused with R&B. Fire.

We saw Anaïs Cardot perform live at a music festival many years ago in Gatineau, Quebec and she’s definitely a special talent and an artist to watch.

EVERYTHINGOSHAUN x PRIVATE NAME PRIVATE NUMBER | “Lemon And Lime”

EverythingOShauN and Private Name Private Number, two of the more active artists in the Greater Toronto Area, have come together to bring early summer Afro-Caribbean vibes on their new single “Lemon And Lime”. It seems rare for Toronto artists to come together, so whenever we get a dope collab it’s always a treat.

The single samples TLC‘s “No Scrubs” acoustic guitar chords as the duo lace the track with their vocals creating a nice little vibe in time for the summer. It has Toronto radio written all over it so don’t be surprised if you hear this one on the airwaves soon.

AMEERAH | “Sickness”

Ameerah is back with the dance music vibes for her new single “Sickness”. Infused with pop production and R&B vocals paired with a catchy hook, this song is probably going to make you want to dance. Somebody get this song on the radio ASAP.

ASYCI | “More Of My Love”

With his first two singles, Toronto’s ASYCI has shown he’s an artist to pay attention to with a very unique and soulful tone. While “Meant something to me” was a velvety smooth love song, “More Of My Love” boasts an upbeat yet laid back groove with the same buttery smooth vocals. Another dope track from ASYCI.

LIL BERETE | “Bedrock”

There are a lot of artists trying to jump on the dance music wave, but few are doing it better than Lil Berete. His vocal style sounds so at home on upbeat production and we hear that again on his latest single “Bedrock”. This is a follow up to his full dance music EP Electric City released back in March and his recently released Afrobeats EP Checka Boy. It looks like Lil Berete is having fun exploring different genres and styles and it shows.

KEYNES WOODS | “Kreps”

“Kreps” is the latest single from Keynes Woods. The production on this is fire and Woods’ flow is clean. He still doesn’t get the recognition he deserves as an artist, but this track reminds us he’s still an artist to watch.

LOLABUNZ, ZLATAN, PSYCHOYP | “100 Degrees” Remix

LolaBunz, who recently graduated with her Masters Degree in Education, has even more to celebrate. If you thought her recent accomplishment meant she would be slowing down, you’re were wrong. She recently went international for the “100 Degrees” remix, enlisting Nigerian artists Zlatan and PsychoYP. The three artists sound great together as Lola Bunz holds her own alongside two rising African stars. Dope remix.

GARY BEALS | Good People, Good Vibes

The title says it all“Good People, Good Vibes” is all about good vibes and good company. The latest Gary Beals offering has a way of making you feel good. It’s also refreshing because this is a style of soulful music with a groove that you would expect from the Southern United States in the 90’s and early 2000’s and not Canada. This is a pleasant surprise from a Canadian artist which contrasts with the highly sexualized and violent content we sometimes get in Black music today. More of this please.
