Queendemme offers a stunning artistic visualization in the final element of a 7-part experimental multimedia journal featuring 60 Black Calgary-based female millenials.
Ask any hip-hop head’s top 5 rappers, rarely does a woman’s name show up. many notorious female artists, from Nicki Minaj to Lil Kim, have been overlooked time and time again in many “Best Rappers of All Time” lists and even on the cover of Vogue. Minaj even spoke on this issue by stating that Billie Eilish set a trend and was instantly on the cover of the iconic fashion magazine. Whereas, Nicki Minaj has been on the scene for years and paved many paths for female artists, but has yet to grace the cover of Vogue.
That being said, Black femininity and success is something society tries to suffocate. The Queendemme music video is proving society won’t ever trump the power of unity, culture and femininity. This group of 60 black female artists from Calgary came together to make a raw yet joyous video showcasing visual arts, R&B and rap. Led by vocalists BLSNG, Sinzere, caedance and Lady Channing, the group effortlessly exemplifies the beauty of Black art.
The visuals for Queendemme are the last element of a seven part experimental multimedia project aiming to showcase the Black, millennial women of the prairies. With the support of The Calgary Society for Independent Filmmakers, Calgary Arts Development, and The City of Calgary, Queendemme blossomed. “A beautiful expression of the nuances of Black joy & creative liberation,” Canadian author Rachel Ricketts says of the video.
With a vibrant and vulnerable video showcasing 60 female artists, there are more notable names to be mentioned. One of the video’s editors, Daniel Pianezza, has worked on 2 of Jessie Reyez’ recent music videos. Produced by Rheanna ‘Caedance’ Lauren, the project also contains footage from award-winning cinematographers & directors Misha Maseka and Gabriel Yee, who, like the project’s director Sabrina Naz-Comanescu and cinematographer Wyatt Sawyer, have all had their work featured in film festivals and competitions internationally. The song creators behind this single have also worked with the likes of Joey Bada$$, Russ and JuiceWrld.
The Queendemme wraps up this impactful project perfectly, giving more role models for young Black girls to look up to, as well as for any rap fan to educate themselves on the power of Black female talent.
