Canada’s R&B scene has been on fire in recent years and now there’s another name to look out for. International fashion model turned artist, Brent Williams, recently dropped his new single “Songs About You”, an early 2000’s inspired take on the classic break up song. On the track, Williams masterfully combines his soft vocals and smooth delivery to depict the harsh realities of pain and heartbreak. The long-time poet tells the story of a toxic relationship and love gone wrong, turning it into a story of growth and self-love as Williams doesn’t allow the experience to taint his ability to continue loving and giving again.
“This song was a moment of me taking back my power”, he told SHIFTER. “It’s so easy to get caught up in the narrative people create for you. This was me deciding that I was going to take the experience I had in this relationship and turn it into something beautiful.”
The song is the first single off his upcoming EP Matters of the Heart where he will re-examine past relationships, telling his side of the story. Williams, who directed the music video himself working alongside videographer Sharleen Meinke, also had a very clear direction for the visual message and story he wanted to tell.
“We attempted to capture a feeling”, he explains. “When you look at your relationship and realize you’ve outgrown that relationship and the feeling of discomfort that comes with it.”
Although he only recently made the transition from the runway to the recording studio, the move was a long time coming. It was only during the COVID-19 pandemic that he was able to take time away from the fast paced world of modelling to take the leap into music as a means of self-discovery and healing. It’s this need to heal and bring people together that inspired his first single “What If It Was Me” about the victims of police brutality in light of the events of 2020. As both a Black and queer artist, Williams is perfectly positioned to promote a message of love, unity and acceptance, especially during a pandemic where the world has never been more physically apart.
