Boslen feat. Tyla Yaweh
P2P
Release date: April 2, 2021

There’s so much to love about this song and video. First off, we have a mix of rock vocals on the hook and some rapping (or “sing rapping”) on Boslen’s verse. This song defies any category or genre, but all we know is it’s a vibe. When it comes to the video, it’s a crazy spin-0ff of his previous video for “TRIP”. Boslen finds himself in a dreamscape where he’s sitting in the backseat of the car as the scene from “TRIP” plays out with him and his girl driving in the front seat. Oh, and the scene playing backwards. Fire.

Bizz Loc
P2P
Release date: April 2, 2021
Directed by: New Wave Visuals

The video for “P2P” opens with actual footage of Bizz Loc’s recent arrest where we hear him screaming as the police twist his wrists.

In this track and video, Bizz Loc talks about pressing social issues, especially those being faced by Black and Indigenous people. He even goes into a history lesson on the exploitation of First Nations people. The video includes TV news headlines and shots of people protesting. Great message from the Errr God.

anders x FRVRFRIDAY
What I Like
Release date: April 8, 2021
Directed by: KR Productions
Edited by: Orazio

Cool effects? Check. Expensive cars? Check. Cinematic storytelling? Check. Together, we have a movie from anders x FRVRFRIDAY directed by KR Productions. The video also features some nice blue and red lighting. Both on camera and vocally, anders and FRVRFRIDAY compliment each other very well.

Belly feat. Benny The Butcher
Money On The Table
Release date: April 9, 2021
Directed by: James Larese

This video from director James Larese is just crazy. It features never ending backwards movement as the action plays out in front of us. We even see a cloned Belly giving himself a tattoo and passing himself a blunt. There’s a lot of symbolism in this video that corresponds to the lyrics. This is such a unique and creative concept worth watching over and over again.

Omari Mydz
Tonight
Release date: April 9, 2021
Shot by: Solaris Media

Ottawa-based R&B singer-songwriter, Omari Mydz, returned in April with “Tonight”, the follow up to his 2020 release “Ease”.

“To be honest, this song is for anybody who’s ever talked to someone long distance. Whether it be flirting, something serious or absolutely nothing. It’s about that first spark you get when talking to someone new. It’s about that feeling you get when you start talking to someone and that’s all you wanna do”, he explains.

“The video aims to display just that feeling! In the video I’m by myself, with my boys or driving and I’m still singing about that person. It shows me being in a bunch of different situations and even still, it’s all about her”, he said when asked about the vision for the video.

Houdini
Part Of Me
Release date: April 9, 2021
Video by: @mvastudio
Directed by: Michael Vincent, Dimarjio Jenkins (Houdini)

In April, a video was dropped for “Part Of Me”, the latest release from the late rapper, Houdini. The video features luxury cars and show Houdini inside a jet. In the words of the Houdini himself who co-directed the video, “This is about coming from the hood and finally making it!” showing he had a vision for the messages he wanted to convey. The video is also a sad reminder of the path he was on as an artist and his limitless potential. RIP.

Lil Berete
No Scale
Release date: April 9, 2021
Directed by: Foulchild

Lil Berete is still one of the most hardworking and consistent artists in Canada. In April, he released new visuals for “No Scale” courtesy of video director, Foulchild. The video features a hazy aesthetic and scenes of Berete in what looks like downtown Montreal giving the visuals a very artistic and cultural vibe.

Dax
WHOOPTY Remix
Release date: April 13, 2021
Shot by: Logan Meis

Dax’s “WHOOPTY Remix” video opens with some comic relief as we see an elderly Dax getting upset with the young generation. Later in the video, we see him do a wardrobe change into a Superman suit and janitor’s uniform. There are also some dance sequences with cool camera movement. Good work from the Ottawa native.

Ruth B.
Situation
Release date: April 16, 2021
Directed by: Annie Bercy

Between the wardrobe and her sultry voice, this is kinda hot, but in a subtle way. What we get in this video isn’t “Lost Boy” Ruth B. This is grown ass woman Ruth B. Everything about this song and video is soothing and repeat worthy.

Eazy Finesse
Swervin’
Release date: April 16, 2021
Shot by: PREMI

Ottawa rapper and singer, Eazy Finesse, had a busy April releasing two brand new singles, including the Lxcid-produced “Swervin’”. On the track, Eazy Finesse gets introspective about some of the mistakes she’s made as of late and her desire to do better.

The single came with some visuals, shot by her frequent collaborator Premi Productions, that show a vulnerable Eazy Finesse in downtown Toronto surrounded by tall buildings, including the iconic CN Tower. The pair previously worked together on the visuals for “Freestyle Pt. 1 & 2” and “Murda”.

KILLY
Trust Nobody
Release date: April 16, 2021
Shot by: GRAVELSITE
Edited by: Dave Tim

This video is a vibe. Flashing lights, lots of movement, special effects, and quick transitions. Great work from Dave Tim.

The Weeknd & Ariana Grande
Save Your Tears (Remix)
Release date: April 23, 2021
Director: Jack Brown

Scarberia’s very own, The Weeknd, has been killing it in recent years with the animated videos and he returned with another one in April. The video for The Weeknd and Ariana Grande’s “Save Your Tears (Remix)” resurrects his After Hours character as we see him construct a life size Ariana Grande doll.

Maurice Moore
Tell Me It’s True
Release date: April 23, 2021
Director: Mikaela Archon

Back to Ottawa for Maurice Moore’s “Tell Me It’s True”. Directed by Mikaela Archon, there’s a few cool dance sequences and the scenery is amazing. This is a beautiful video that needs to be seen by a lot more people.

Swagger Rite
Spicy
Release date: April 27, 2021

Easily one of the most versatile artists in Toronto, Swagger Rite spent part of April dropping new visuals for “Spicy” off of his EP Detour.

It’s been a while since we’ve all been to a party because of COVID so this video reminds us of what life before the pandemic was like – the dominoes are out, beautiful women are bubbling, men are pulling up behind them. COVID can’t be over soon enough.

Juwn
Rain
Release date: April 30, 2021
Directed by: Rohit Sa

In the video for Juwn’s latest single “Rain” we get a little lingerie and a few drinks. This song and video are straight sexy. That’s all.

Unimerce x Lil Berete
Life
Release date: April 30, 2021
Shot and directed by: Marcus Letts

British-born, Toronto-based DJ and producer, Unimerce, returned in April with her latest single “Life” featuring scorching hot rapper and singer, Lil Berete.

“I definitely made it with Berete in mind. He was coming in the studio the next day”, Unimerce told SHIFTER in a recent interview.

His lyric “I swear my life is a movie” inspires the Fast & The Furious themed visuals shot and directed by Marcus Letts depicting a racing suit wearing Berete and Unimerce speeding in a sports car. It then transitions to an action theme with explosions and a now camo wearing Berete looking to narrowly avoid death.

Romeo Don’t Die feat. Shreez
Accessible
Release date: April 30, 2021
Shot and directed by: Foulchild

In April, Romeo Don’t Die dropped his brand new single and music video “Accessible” with a little help from Montreal rapper, Shreez.

The flavour of the Quebec metropolis is infused throughout this video. Not only was the bilingual track recorded in Mpress’s famous No Sleep Studio in the St. Michel borough of Montreal, but the entire video, directed by Foulchild, was shot in and around Montreal. The visuals feature a vintage and almost hazy aesthetic inspired by Batman, including a Gotham-like rooftop scene, as well as shots of the two rappers in an old diner. According to the “Boom, Boom, Boom” hitmaker, this isn’t a one off, but the first of many bilingual tracks Romeo plans to release over the coming months.
