Justin Bieber has surprised fans with the release of Justice (Triple Chucks Deluxe), the deluxe version of the original album released on March 19. The deluxe album features six new songs including “There She Go” featuring Lil Uzi Vert, “I Can’t Be Myself” featuring his close friend Jaden Smith, “Lifetime”, “Wish You Would” featuring Quavo, “Know No Better” featuring Da Baby, and “Name” featuring Tori Kelly.
The original album featured hits like “Holy” featuring Chance The Rapper, “Lonely” featuring Benny Blanco, “Anyone”, and “Hold On”, which combined for over two billion streams worldwide. It also included “Peaches” featuring fellow Canadian Daniel Caesar and Giveon which has already garnered over 41 million views on YouTube and over 52 million streams on Spotify to date.
While the original album does feature some sounds rooted in Black music, including some soulful vibes to go with the Martin Luther King Jr intro and interlude, it was very a pop heavy album, and that direction continues on the deluxe tracks despite features from some of the biggest names in hip-hop. With the numbers on the new tracks already eclipsing those on the original release, it appears Bieber has a few more hits on his hands.
So let’s dive in and take a track by track look at the new tracks from Justice deluxe edition.
“There She Go” feat. Lil Uzi Vert
It goes without saying, but Justin Bieber’s vocals are so clean and seemingly effortless. He goes in and out of his falsetto so easily and the harmonies are well-executed. There’s a nice groove and pocket to this track. Lil Uzi sounds good on this pop production and the electric guitars are a good nod to Uzi’s well-documented love for rock music.
“I Can’t Be Myself” feat. Jaden Smith
The intro has some strong eighties vibes and, although Bieber’s vocals have a modern sound, the eighties production continues throughout the song with the synths to prove it. This is the kind of song you want to play when you’re driving down a long road with the windows down. This song is destined for some serious air play on adult contemporary radio and for an outro scene of a romantic comedy. Although it’s hard to pin point where Bieber’s vocals end and Smith’s vocals begin, it’s an overall good song with strong replay value.
“Lifetime”
This song provides a nice break from all the pop sounds and looking at the numbers, it’s the most popular song out of the new additions to the album. It’s a simple and beautiful song that really shows Justin Bieber’s journey from a 16 year old kid singing and performing “Baby” to a mature married man approaching 30 years old. His music wreaks of substance, avoiding a lot of the empty messaging and filler found in other pop songs. There are no frills and wasted words in Bieber’s music and this song is a prime example of that.
“Wish You Would” feat. Quavo
There’s not much that stands out about this song, but it has a nice groove and Quavo sounds great on this guitar laden beat.
“Know No Better” feat. Da Baby
This has a very unorthodox R&B beat, but Justin Bieber always shines when he reaches into his R&B bag. Da Baby also surprises us by flashing some smooth vocals of his own on this track.
This is probably the most unique song on the whole album. It may take a few listens to fully appreciate (or even understand) what you’re listening to, but if you give it a chance it will probably grow on you.
“Name” feat. Tori Kelly
The acoustic guitars make a return for “Name” featuring Tori Kelly. It’s easy to forget how great of a vocalist she is, but she is definitely one of the best. Her vocals are so clear and her tone is perfection. Meanwhile, Bieber is refreshing as he sings in his “natural” voice with no falsetto or runs, exuding simplicity and honesty. Together their harmony is impeccable. It’s just an overall beautiful song, but what else would you expect from Justin Bieber and Tori Kelly?
