Ottawa hip-hop artist Mazyn (formerly Capé) recently dropped “Better Days”, his second release of 2021 so far. The song is an anthem of hope, meant to inspire the listener, especially given the times we’re living in.
On the new single, the Egyptian international student, who started to write rhymes in his dorm room to cope with homesickness and the stress of university life, sheds light on his experience of starting a life in a new country. The song has a hopeful and almost youthful energy and optimism as Mazyn blends both modern and traditional hip-hop sounds. As he sings, “I been praying for some better days” on the song’s hook, it’s clearly a sentiment we can all connect with as we anticipate an end to the global pandemic.

“Better Days represents hope and making it through the days of struggle especially when everything doesn’t make sense at the time”, Mazyn told SHIFTER. “Eventually, it comes full circle at the end through perseverance and patience.”
The single is a follow up to his February release “Mafesh Monafes” which translates to “No Competition”, his first ever song in Arabic, where he previously tackled the theme of navigating life in Canada while also delving into the alienation he sometimes feels from his home country and culture.
Mazyn started building a name for himself in the Ottawa music scene in 2019 earning a nomination for “Hip-Hop Artist of the Year” at Faces Magazine’s Ottawa Awards in 2019, as well as Capcityhiphop’s “Top 50 Rappers in 2019” and SHIFTER’s “Top 10 Ottawa Rappers” list.
