This video starts with the optimism of young love. Everything is literally butterflies and sunshine. Alessia Cara’s voice is like a summer afternoon. Then the other side of young love kicks in – break ups and couples drifting apart. Overall, this video packs a lot of emotion and provides an example of good storytelling.

This is one of the best videos on our list. It opens with a cool drone shots and has some cool close ups of wheels and interiors. Serious car porn for car fans.
When it comes to WISE’s look, it’s very unique. He doesn’t look like anyone else in hip-hop. When you first see him you might be tempted to pass him off as some sort of gimmick rapper, until he opens his mouth and starts to rap. His flow is on point. This dude is a star.
Jessie Reyez
Saint Nobody

This is the first of two Jessie Reyez videos on our list, and it happens to be the most artistic one of the month. It opens with a close up of Jessie Reyez’s eyeball staring into space…until the shot pulls back and you realize she’s actually in space (or what look like it).
The songwriting is excellent although it’s a bit eerie with lyrics like, “I think about dying every day. I’ve been told that that’s a little strange”,
Although the video is somewhat graphic, paired with the songwriting it’s such an overall great piece of art. There’s some great messaging about the current generation if you’re able to pick it up.
Jessie Reyez and 6LACK
Groovy

The second Jessie Reyez video on our list is “Groovy”, a collaboration with 6LACK. This has to absolutely be one of the best collaborations of the year so far. Zac Facts treats us to some very cinematic shots of Reyez in a bathtub, and Reyez and 6LACK sitting in an empty room back to back, before bringing the story full circle at the end. In a time where music videos tend to have a lot of filters and effects, the simplicity of this video is refreshing and allows Reyez, 6LACK and the story to shine.
PS: Jessie Reyez looks sexy as hell in this video.

Going Thru It

I love this video. It’s nice to see young black kids doing well. Throughout the video for “Going Thru It” we see the contrast of the hood and the rich life. As with other videos on our list it’s very simple, but the message is clear.
Blacka Da Don feat. Nightmare

In “Get Right” we see Blacka Da Don riding through his Pelham Park neighbourhood in a Ferrari. We also see him and his crew hanging out on their block. A few bottles of Hennesy make an appearance.

“Fox Fur” is Pressa’s second video on our roundup. It opens with Pressa wearing on of the dopest hoodies I’ve ever seen. When you look up drip in the urban dictionary this outfit should be there. We also get some cool shots of London including an aerial shot of the O2 Arena.

For the second month in a row our Toronto music video roundup includes something from the godfather of Canadian hip-hop, Maestro Fresh Wes. This one features Natasha Waterman and one of my heroes back in high school, Saukrates, on vocals. The video features drone shots of the Scarborough Bluffs, as well as Maestro downtown and at the barbershop. This is a lot of classic Toronto in one video.
