SHIFTER BOSS – NATASHA PATTEN, FASHION DESIGNER AND CREATIVE DIRECTOR OF MYCOATISBLUE

Natasha Patten is a celebrity makeup artist and designer on a mission to design outerwear differently. Throughout the past 15 years, the talented Toronto-based designer has worked across different facets of the Canadian fashion and beauty industries. She led wardrobe and makeup on CBC’s Money Moron with Gail Vaz-Oxlade, designed at Canadian fashion house Izzy Camilleri and ultimately launched her luxury outerwear label mycoatisblue, sported by industry heavyweights Kardinal Offishall for ET Canada, Tim & Sid for Sportsnet, and on-air by Kayla Grey for TSN.

Before launching her designer label five years ago, Natasha obtained a degree in Fashion Marketing and a certificate in Pattern Drafting from Ryerson University, as well as a diploma in Creative Makeup Design from the Toronto School of Make Up Art. She then went on to debut her fashion takeover as a makeup artist working alongside celebrities and on productions such as Til Debt Do Us Part, Super Zee and Princess. As a seasoned makeup artist and wardrobe consultant, she launched Blue Image Group, an umbrella agency for beauty education and makeup and image consultancy.

Prior to the lockdown, Natasha taught her own in-person makeup classes, preparing today’s makeup artists for the ever-evolving world of beauty and cosmetics. Natasha strives to address the lack of training on how to work the darker skin tones of people of colour. Natasha’s passion for this line of work comes from years of being a firsthand witness to improper beauty practices on people of darker complexions.

“It is unacceptable because it says to them, once again, that ‘you are not enough’”, she explains. Whether it’s through her designs or her makeup artistry, Natasha Patten stands for empowerment and she delivers.

Mycoatisblue is about timelessness, style and custom tailoring to get the perfect fit. An instant confidence enhancer and deliberately designed, the pieces are architectural, structured and always make a statement. Each one features the brand’s signature silky kasha blue lining. Blue symbolizes freedom, inspiration and confidence, a core aspect of the brand’s underlying DNA. Sophistication, poise and elegance this is the essence of mycoatisblue, and the craftsmanship truly impresses. Natasha raises the bar and her commitment to the client never ceases to amaze.

The latest collection features neutral tones, structured silhouettes and clean lines. Patten’s approach to outerwear stems from the need to breathe life back into winter wardrobes during brutal Canadian winters.

When asked what inspires her to achieve this, she noted, “Whereas people often put on a great outfit and then cover it with a drowning coat, mycoatisblue makes you feel like you’ll never want to take that coat off”, and her work is simply that good!

Over the course of her career trajectory, Natasha Patten has built her budding fashion and beauty empire from the ground up. She has adapted to the quick paced world of fast fashion by adopting a “made-to-order” business model instead and embracing the pandemic’s digital revolution. Successful in both women’s and menswear, Natasha has established herself as an inclusive designer with incredible range. So what’s next for mycoatisblue?

Word has it that there is a new collection on the way, and knowing Natasha, we are expecting nothing less than a unique take on the ordinary everyday outerwear. We cannot wait to see what’s in store for Natasha Patten, and will be looking out for her upcoming collection.
