Canadian Neo-soul artist Dominique ‘DomLand’ Gorley is back in the spotlight after a short hiatus with her new EP “Dipped in Black”.
“This project honours my late partner, Dip Black, who passed away while I was pregnant with our son. Though the journey has been painful, creating this music became a therapeutic way to process grief and transform it into something lasting,” -DomLand.
The EP is dedicated to her late partner Dip Black, a celebrated underground artist who passed away in 2022 after an unfortunate drowning incident.
Born in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, the Ottawa-based hip hop artist rose to popularity for his lyricism and delivery, heard on his “Shook Ones” freestyle along with songs like “Liu Kang” and “Nightmares“.
In 2019, he was ranked the #1 rapper in Ottawa and the most skilled lyricist by SHIFTER.
“This project honours my late partner, Dip Black, who passed away while I was pregnant with our son. Though the journey has been painful, creating this music became a therapeutic way to process grief and transform it into something lasting,” says DomLand.
While highlighting the work of a fearless and inspired creative, the project is also meant to showcase DomLand’s intimate journey through grief, healing, and the enduring power of love.
DomLand’s soulful vocals are graced with live instruments for a blissful musical experience but to also illustrate her emotions and how this event impacted her life.
“DomLand has always been the place people said I lived – in my head, in my thoughts, in my own world.”
The EP Dipped in Black configures three songs – “No Distance”, “Written in Stars”, and “Legacy”. Through this project, DomLand allows her vulnerability and strength to co-exist.
As grief and sadness mainly fill the themes of this project, “Legacy” helps shift the energy. Still rooted in grief, but no longer consumed by it, the track leans into something more enduring, a product of their relationship, their son, Lyric. He is what remains, what continues and what is passed on.
Dominique recently rebranded herself to ‘DomLand’ in the scope of creating her artist identity.
“DomLand has always been the place people said I lived – in my head, in my thoughts, in my own world,” says Dominique.
As someone who keeps her life private, her creative identity is a place where she feels she can express herself freely, share her most intimate stories and let both the darkness and the light live together.
If you’re going through any sort of loss, or you simply want to feel DomLand’s compelling vocals, message and sound, Dipped in Black is a project you do not want to pass on.
Dipped in Black is currently available on streaming platforms.
