Spencer, Liv and Coop are unsure about their relationships and Jordan and Billy hide his new coaching job from Spencer who is onto Jordayla’s secret. Here’s our All American season 5 episode 9 recap.
Confronting fears and bad omens are the theme for this episode. The Santa Ana winds are blowing, causing people to confront fears and ultimately face the truth. A superstitious Billy believes everything goes crazy with the “devil winds” and he may be right.
Shakeup continues at GAU
This episode opens with Spencer getting an emergency alert about his interview regarding Coach Garrett for GAU. Both he and Jordan later give their interviews and find out that the coaches may not be able to save themselves, meaning Coach Kenny may be out of a job. Jordan and Spencer talk with Isaiah about telling his truth to help save the coaches. Isaiah knows he will lose everything by coming forward.
AD Barnes and Billy meet to discuss Billy’s decision. He’s ready to go and make changes but Barnes slows him down saying that bureaucracy is getting in the way. GAU will need to make sure there’s no one else involved with the scandal, but Kenny may be collateral damage. Unfortunately, Billy’s start is on hold until the inquiry is over.
The Vortex plays relationship musical chairs
Spencer and Coop are not sure about their relationships. They are both avoiding their new significant others, unsure of how serious these relationships really are and whether getting more serious is the way to go. Meanwhile, Olivia is caught texting Noah and reveals that she feels some ‘butterflies’ for him; feelings she hasn’t felt since Spencer. She invites him over on a date.
The winds cause the power to go out. The darkness causes the truth to arise in both Spencer and Olivia. Spencer has a heart-to-heart with Alicia as she shares her truth and fears about going deeper. Spencer isn’t quite ready at first. This same darkness causes Olivia to confront her truth that she’s not quite over Spencer and Noah is left without that goodnight kiss. However, after walking in on Liv and Noah’s date, Spencer is willing to face his fear of moving on and decides on taking things with Alicia to the next level.
Later, during a mother-daughter talk, Laura encourages Liv to go after Spencer if she wants him back.

Patience battles insecurity
Patience is back and is prepping for a fan meet up. She meets Miko who is showing some stalker tendencies, but says she’s found confidence watching Patience blossom while on tour. Patience leaves on a high, but soon faces crippling anxiety and insecurity because of fans pointing out her physical flaws. Later, Skye and Patience get chummy as Skye offers her some guidance on dealing with social media. It’s clear that Coop isn’t exactly a fan of this budding friendship.
Lies threaten Spencer and Jordan’s relationship
Jordan’s interactions with Spencer are so off. He’s trying so hard not to share what he knows about Billy taking the coaching job at GAU, but keeps slipping with little tidbits of information that have Spencer wondering what is happening. Jordan tells Spencer he has decided to stay at GAU, leaving Spencer to conclude “the math ain’t mathing”. He is later caught talking to Layla about football and Spencer’s wheels begin to turn. He finds Layla and enters into a comical banter about her conversation with Jordan. Their conversation is cut short when they walk in on Olivia and Noah during their date.
In a conversation with A.D. Barnes, Spencer learns that Billy was offered the GAU coaching job setting up a standoff with Billy and Jordan.
Spencer knows about Jordayla
Jordayla fans will love that Jordan believes Layla to be the best part of his life. Spencer eventually tells Jordan he’s figured out his secret with Layla and is genuinely happy for him noting that he would never tell anyone because he would never betray his ‘brother’. Jordan is of course rattled by this and gives an ultimatum to Billy to come clean or he will tell Spencer.
JJ, Asher and Jaymee are no where to be seen in this episode but we do know that Jaymee is stable.
