Segun Caezar
Segun Caezar is a Nigerian artist who has been honing his craft over the past 10 years. Drawing inspiration from Dutch artist De Stijl, his art his influenced by his fascination with “the power of simple shapes to convey complex ideas”. His style draws from realism and is minimalistic with pastels and pops up colour that make his work classic and timeless. This approach is seen in his Union Station piece which also draws from themes of spirituality.
“Okay, so I was absolutely inspired by MLK, Martin Luther King, because during his time was when the Black struggle was really on the rise; him and Malcolm X. And I was asking myself, “What was happening in that time that was different between then and now. done now?” and I realized MLK was actually a minister in church and Malcolm X was the national representative for the national Islam. So I realized spirituality was kind of important to them. So my piece is of a woman, a Black woman, a profile view on a journey of life and discovering ourselves. And my background represents spirituality, the blocks of colour, and the black line passing through.” Segun Cezar, interview with SHIFTER
