KJ and Khalil come into their own, exercising their independence from their fathers, while Layla learns to forgive and forget. Here’s our All American Season 7 Episode 4 recap.
This episode sees KJ and Khalil coming into their own, making their own decisions, and exercising their independence from their fathers. We also see KJ and Khalil, Jordan and Spencer 2.0, becoming key members of their respective teams.
Now, let’s take a closer look at what went down on All American Season 7 Episode 4.
KJ and Cassius clash
The episode opens with KJ watching old game film of Jordan playing for Beverly. He’s interrupted by a video call from his mom who has feedback about his last game.
KJ is fitting right in as the leader of his team, working out with his team and showing them film. Cassius notices him stepping into a leadership role, but when KJ tries to introduce an old Beverly play that Jordan used to run, he isn’t having it. KJ goes into Cassius’ office to apologize, but Cassius flexes his muscle. As long as he’s head coach, the team will be running his plays, not the Bakers’.
After school, KJ goes into the fitness center at school and finds Cassius hitting the heavy bag. When he slips out to call his mom, Ava, she surprises him, arriving at the school for a visit. When the three of them grab lunch at The Hangout, Ava can tell that there’s tension between Cassius and KJ. She tries to get some answers, but it only leads to more tension. Ava is reminded why their relationship can’t work.
Khalil’s ultimatum
At Crenshaw, Khalil now has a cubby in the changeroom with his name on it. Coach Bobby lets him know that he, not Jordan, will be looking to find him playing time.
Khalil is startled when he bumps into his father, Marqui, in the hallway at school. He harps on Khalil’s past shortcomings, including not finishing what he starts. Against Jordan’s advice, he decides to take Khalil out of school early.
When Khalil and his dad pull up at The Hangout, KJ is outside, leading to some tension. But things calm down when Cassius comes outside. Marqui doesn’t want that kind of smoke. Inside, Marqui is talking to Khalil about gang stuff, but Khalil just wants to focus on his football plays. Later, Khalil runs out of practice and Jordan guesses that it has something to do with his father.
After heading back to Crenshaw, Jordan finds Khalil studying plays in class. Jordan wants to trust Khalil and Khalil wants to play, but he’s worried about letting both him and his dad down. His father has always held him down, but football has introduced him to a whole new world. He doesn’t know what to do. Jordan is able to share his own story about him and Billy. Later, Khalil’s father comes to the fitness center to pick up Khalil so they can slide on their opps, the Bloods. Khalil stands up to his dad and chooses football over the streets.
Layla forgives and forgets
At Layla’s, Coop is watching her lecture for school and it looks like she’s feeling her professor a little bit. She gets star struck when recording artist, and Olivia’s friend, Elle Grant, walks in. She’s trying to get back into songwriting after being canceled 10 years earlier. Unfortunately, Layla isn’t looking for new songwriters. When she leaves, Coop digs a little deeper and finds that Layla is still upset about the comments she made when she was 18 years old about people with mental illness. With both Layla and her mother suffering from depression, Elle’s comments cut deep.
At the Baker house, Coop invites Elle over so she, Elle, and Layla can get to know each other. Layla sees it as another violation of her space. Elle guesses that Layla is upset about the comments she made about mental illness years earlier, apologizes, and leaves. After giving each other the silent treatment, Coop encourages Layla again to give Elle a chance.
Layla finally reads Elle’s song and asks to meet her at Layla’s. She explains why she was triggered earlier. She says that everyone deserves a second chance and reintroduces herself so they can start all over again.
Jordan Baker, P.I.
At the Baker house, Layla comes downstairs to find that Jordan pulled an all-nighter. He’s investigating whether Coach Bobby is his father’s long lost brother.
At school, Jordan tries to sit down and engage in some small talk with Coach Bobby to further his investigation. Layla walks in and surprises Jordan with some burgers, which he shares with Coach Bobby, leading to coach and Layla bonding over music.
Liv reveals that her and Jordan’s grandmother’s son was never adopted; it fell through so he was placed in foster care. She has an address. It’s in Napa.
KJ and Khalil come into their own
After KJ and Cassius watched the game at Crenshaw last episode, Jordan attends the game at Beverly. KJ seems a little frazzled. Khalil’s father pulls up to the game and Jordan talks to him about Khalil’s bad practice and being out late with him the night before.
At halftime, Ava follows KJ into the hallway and encourages him to trust his instincts. He knows what he has to do. KJ asks Cassius if he can say something to the team, but Cassius seems a bit hesitant…until KJ turns things around on the field. With Beverly trailing, Cassius calls a play that hasn’t been working all night. When KJ reminds him that the play hasn’t been working, he snaps at KJ and orders him to run the play. KJ makes an executive decision and runs Jordan’s old play for a touchdown. Ava sees that Cassius isn’t taking it too well on the sidelines.
After the game, Ava comes by the hotel. Cassius confides that the Eagles is the only thing he has that’s his own and the Bakers’ plays threaten that. When KJ arrives back at the hotel, Cassius apologizes for being stubborn and admits that KJ was right for calling him out. Cassius suggests they watch old Beverly game film together, but something is still on Cassius’ mind.
