Homecoming is in the air, Amina wants answers, and Cassius wants the smoke. Here’s our All American Season 7 Episode 8 recap.
We’re eight episodes into Season 7, so there’s no better time to assess how the season has been going so far.
I have to say that since the Season 7 premiere, the new generation of All American has grown on me. A lot. I had my doubts if I’m being honest, but I’m happy to say I was wrong. This show is good; really good. The writers are doing a pretty good job.
Next episode marks the return of Daniel Ezra (Spencer James), who will also be directing the episode, so many fans will be tuning in. But I have to say that the characters and stories are so interesting, I don’t find myself longing for the old characters and actors. While it’s nice to see familiar faces every now and then, Alexis Chikaeze (Amina), Nathaniel Logan McIntyre (KJ), Antonio J. Bell (Khalil), and Lauryn Hardy (Tori) have been a pleasant surprise and are more than holding their own.
Now, let’s see what went down on All American Season 7 Episode 8.
Amina crowned Homecoming Queen
Coop is now living at the Preach/Amina residence. Coop is woken up when someone knocks at the door to wake up Amina. It’s a new tradition as she will be named Miss South Crenshaw, aka Homecoming Queen. It’s clear that Amina wishes her mom was there to do her hair and help her get ready.
Cassius wants the smoke
At Beverly, Cassius and KJ are doing an interview, but the media cut it short to go cover the pep rally for South Crenshaw’s Homecoming game. KJ is okay with it, but Cassius is upset at playing second fiddle to Crenshaw. He uses the screen time to talk a bit of trash against Crenshaw. He says that KJ is the best quarterback in the city, and that Beverly is the best team. Jordan sees the video and isn’t a fan of Cassius throwing shade at his dad’s legacy.
Cassius decides to let his assistant coach lead practice while he researches the journalist who interviewed him. He’s upset that he’s been writing a weekly piece on South Crenshaw. He feels his players deserve the same attention.
KJ then calls Amina to congratulate her on becoming Miss South Crenshaw. She’s happy to know they’re still friends after their fake breakup. KJ mentions that his father needs a friend or hobby. Amina suggests he set his dad up on a blind friend date. At Layla’s, a Beverly alum, Dwayne, introduces himself to Cassius. He congratulates him on how dominant the Beverly team has been compared to the Billy Baker years. Cassius is touched and invites him to sit down. KJ is excited that the blind friend date is a success.
Homecoming Game debacle
At Crenshaw, Khalil receives a message from Von, his football rival from Slauson, calling him out for moving to Beverly Hills while his dad is locked up. He promises to see him on the field at the Homecoming game. Soon we learn that Yasi has been crowned Mr. South Crenshaw and Amina’s mother was a former Miss South Crenshaw.
Meanwhile, Jordan tries to convince Coach Bobby to let Khalil start the Homecoming game to get their offense going.
At the Homecoming game, Khalil is nervous and misses his assignment. Jordan calls a play for Khalil leading to a touchdown; the first of many. But things get tense when Von intentionally injures Yasi. At halftime, the South Crenshaw and Slauson players meet up in the hallway and fight. Khalil does what Spencer would do and takes responsibility for a fight he didn’t start. Amina is angry with him when Homecoming Court is cancelled.
Khalil returns home to the Baker house, but Layla won’t let him sulk. She knows he’s taking responsibility for a fight he didn’t start.
Jordan and Cassius then sit down together at Layla’s. Jordan informs Cassius about DTF (Dads That Friend), an online challenge where kids set up their dads with potential friends. Cassius feels lame that his son felt to do that. They soon engage in a competitive back and forth. Jordan clowns Cassius for his son wearing his number and Cassius vows to crumble South Crenshaw’s kingdom. Jordan is trying to figure out if Cassius is a nice guy or an opp, but Cassius replies he can be both.
Later, KJ admits that he set his dad up on the friend dates because their lives were so full in Oakland and KJ misses that, especially for his dad.
Meanwhile, Khalil and Amina head back to the football field where he apologizes and prepares a Homecoming dinner date. But Amina can’t stop thinking about her mom. Khalil encourages her to talk to her dad and Coop to learn the truth about her mom. Amina takes his advice and walks into the house and immediately demands to know the truth about her mom’s murder. She gets a little rude, so Preach has to put her in her place. Later, Preach and Coop agree that although they don’t have all the answers, they need to tell Amina something. When they try to talk to her, they find out she already left to get answers from her grandparents in Baltimore.
At home, Jordan talks to Khalil and lets him know he knows he didn’t start the fight. He also questions whether his dad, Marqui, had Von come after him.
Later, at a media interview, we see Jordan coming into his own as a coach. Coach Bobby even gives him credit for Khalil’s on-field performance.
Layla’s back
At Layla’s, Layla is listening to new artists to sign and perform Elle’s lyrics, but she can’t find anyone who inspires her. Coop suggests she bring Elle to record it since she wrote it. Elle records her vocals and it’s exactly what the song needed, but Elle is worried she’ll ruin Layla’s label’s brand.
When Jordan returns home, Layla encourages him to check the video footage of the hallway to see that Khalil didn’t start the fight. Layla also fills him in on finding her new artist—Elle, although she’s reluctant.
Later, Layla meets with Elle again and tries to convince her to reintroduce the world to her gift. But Elle doesn’t need to be convinced now that she’s sober and has the support.
