Coop and Patience have some decisions to make after being approved for their dream apartment and Amina celebrates a big win.. Here’s our All American Season 7 Episode 7 recap.
The OG All American vibes continue as Coop and Patience are approved for their dream apartment. Meanwhile, the new storylines continue to mirror the OG storylines. The challenge for the producers and writers will be how to make the show feel familiar without making it predictable for viewers. So far, they’ve done a good job of making the story compelling (and messy) enough to make some viewers watch week after week.
Now, let’s take a closer look at what went down on All American Season 7 Episode 7.
Layla and Jordan’s adjustment
Layla and Jordan are adjusting to their new house guest, Khalil. She decides to get up early and go downstairs to make him pancakes. Unfortunately, he bet her to it. He made “Miss LB” pancakes instead (and he cleaned up too). She asks him to eat with her, but he declines and heads off to school. She’s worried that he’s doing too much in order to earn his place in the house.
At school, Khalil is not sure he deserves Jordan and Layla’s hospital since his father’s arrest is a lot to deal with. Meanwhile, Amina finds out she won the student council president election. Her friend suggests she throws a party, partly to bring Amina and Khalil together. She’s hesitant, but agrees in the end.
Coop and Patience’s dilemma
Coop is having breakfast at Amina’s house, but things are cut short when Khalil comes to pick her up for school. At the Baker house, Coop is impressed by Khalil’s kitchen cleaning skills. Layla wants to know if she and Patience had a chance to talk about the disconnect between the two of them. Mid-conversation, Coop gets a notification that the dream apartment her and Patience had been waiting on for a year is now available. For her, it’s a sign that her and Patience belong together.
Later at the Baker house, Patience receives a text from her castmate (who puts a smile on her face and seems to be more than a friend). Layla asks if she’s excited about moving into her new place with Coop. She looks uncomfortable since they’ve barely talked in the past few days, but Coop seems bent on proving to Layla that they’re fine. Patience congratulates Coop on getting a B on her exam, but Coop is an A student now. Aside from not really knowing Coop anymore, she seems slightly upset that Coop is on a first name basis with her professor.
Coop goes to visit her professor to talk about her B on the exam. She admits her mind was on things with Patience and asks if she can take it again. Her professor crosses a professional boundary (again) and gives Coop relationship advice. She convinces Coop to put their relationship on a mock trial.
Amina’s party?
Amina drops into Layla’s and receives a big congratulations from Layla and Coop. Amina wants to throw a party at Layla’s. Layla doesn’t want underage kids at her club, but she offers the Baker house instead.
At Beverley, KJ reveals to Tori that his dad gave him the weekend off. Tori assumes he’s free, but unfortunately he’s going to Amina’s victory party. Her invites her to come, and while she’s hesitant at first, she decides to go to the party along with his teammates.
Cassius and Ava’s anniversary
When Layla arrives at her club, Cassius is already day drinking. It’s his first post-separation anniversary and his marriage might be over. She decides to sit down and keep him company. Cassius takes all the responsibility for things not working out with Ava. Soon, we learn that Cassius was never really into football and that he’s only a coach because KJ loves football and he loves to coach. Layla and Cassius are getting unnecessarily close. Are the writers and producers setting up an affair storyline or a miscommunication where they misread each other’s signals someone makes a move? Let’s hope not.
Later, after Layla receives a complaint from her neighbor about Amina’s party and the alarm system and cameras have been disarmed, she and Cassius head back to the Baker house.
Amina’s party
At Amina’s party, Khalil seems uptight and Amina’s friend notices it. Amina explains that he’s probably still thinking about his dad and needs to relax. Her friend brings out a bottle of liquor. After Patient and Layla notice how lame the party is, Layla says she can invite more people.
While Khalil and Amina are talking, KJ and Tori pull up to the party and make things interesting. Amina and KJ are about to exchange a real kiss when Tori interrupts them. When Tori takes Amina away to change the music, Khalil confronts KJ about pulling up to the party with another girl on his arm.
Amina and her friend convince Patience, who was left in charge by Layla, to go talk to Coop about how she feels after she confided in high school kids. With Patience and Layla gone, and Tori taking the party to another level, things are about to get out of hand. Khalil is concerned about keeping the Baker house tidy and the party under control. Soon he’s dared to kiss the shortest girl at the party, which is Amina. Instead he chooses to take a drink. Amina is then dared to re-enact her favorite sex position with Khalil, which KJ isn’t exactly feeling, while Tori is dared to do 7 Minutes In Heaven with KJ, which Amina isn’t feeling either. Yup, this party is messy. Instead of kissing, Tori and KJ decide to just hang out since he already rejected her the first time. But after a brief conversation, they end up kissing anyway.
After they’ve been upstairs for a while, Khalil is ready to check KJ for being disrespectful to Amina, but she wants to handle it herself. She comes upstairs and finds them half dressed. When things are about to get real, Layla and Cassius show up and shut the party down.
With the kids all gone, Layla and Cassius officially become friends. But the same can’t be said for Amina and KJ. She’s fuming and wonders why KJ didn’t just tell Khalil the truth instead of messing around with Tori. He’s wondering why she’s upset when they were fake dating. She decides to end things since their fake relationship is interfering with his life, but she’s clearly hurt.
Later, Khalil approaches Amina wanting answers about Tori’s comment about her fake relationship. An angry Amina, picks Khalil apart for being blind to the fact her relationship with KJ was fake, and for Khalil not wanting to kiss her back when she tried to kiss him. She feels she deserves better. She walks out, but he still wants to be friends.
At home, KJ admits to Cassius that he kind of hooked up with Tori. When he’s finally alone, Cassius finds peace when he a social media picture of Ava wearing her wedding ring.
Khalil’s guilt
After the party, Khalil apologizes for the kids messing up Layla’s house. She tells him that he doesn’t need to earn his right to stay at their house. He has survivor’s guilt and doesn’t think his life deserves to get better while his father has to be behind bars. She’s a great mom and gives him a big hug. Before he goes upstairs, he asks Layla why high school girls like to play games. She gives him the advice he’s looking for. She’s visibly happy and content that her and Jordan have done the right thing in bringing Khalil into their home and helping him out.
Coop and Patience’s decision
Meanwhile, at relationship mock court, Coop questions whether two people who may have drifted apart should reconsider if there’s a future really there, or if they’re just holding onto the past. Patience happened to hear everything, setting up an awkward but well-needed conversation. Patience wants to be mad at Coop, but she can’t. They’re different people now. They’re grown ups now and have outgrown each other, and are chasing versions of each other that no longer exist. The Patience and Coop montage says this is officially it for their relationship, and probably for Patience as a character. It’s kind of sad if you’ve been following the series from the beginning.
Back at Amina’s house, Coop and Amina talk about their relationship troubles. Amina has potentially lost two good friends in KJ and Khalil, and Coop shares that she and Patience have broken up. Now that Coop can’t afford her dream apartment on her own, Amina suggests that she moves in with her and her dad since she’s always there and there’s an extra room. At least until Amina finds out more about the truth behind her mother’s murder.

Something this episode of #AllAmerican showed is that Layla is such a great protagonist, I always hated how they missused and sidelined her for a lot of parts of last seasons.
Now she is the STAR and is KILLING IT, I love her complexity and emotional journey being shown. pic.twitter.com/cRi07r0mNW

I desperately hope the writers aren’t gonna make some weird storyline between Layla & KJs Dad. Get him a therapist (that isn’t a 20 year old, recently married woman)
