Toronto DJ, DJ Rych Kydd, pairs modern R&B vocals with classic R&B beats on his new Back 2 The Future mixtape.
If you’re familiar with urban radio or the club scene in Toronto you’ve already heard the name DJ Rych Kydd. He first caught the DJing bug at 10 years old while watching TV and seeing a child dj’ing.
In 2011, he was named ‘Toronto’s Rated Next DJ’ at the Stylus Spinfest Awards presented by Pioneer DJ. He later became one of the DJ’s at FLOW 93.5 FM with his mixes heard nationally on syndicated Sirius XM radio, and even landed on our “Top 20 Canadian DJ’s You Need To Know” list.
He recently dropped a new mixtape called Back 2 The Future Vol. 1 where he pairs modern R&B vocals from artists like Ella Mai, Drake and Summer Walker with classic R&B beats from Aliyah, Black Street and the Isley Brothers.Â
“During the first lockdown, I had this idea of remixing new songs on older instrumentals and calling it #Back2TheFuture”, he explained in a recent Instagam post. “The only problem is, most artists now a days don’t release full versions of their songs so the vision was put on pause. Recently, the vision came to life thanks to #SeratoStems @serato. Y’all know R&B is my lane so it’s only right Vol. 1 is R&B remixes.”
It opens with three standout mixes in Snoh Aalegra’s “I Want You Around” over Faith Evans’ “I Love You”, Ella Mai’s “Not Another Love Song” over the Isley Brothers’ “Footsteps In The Dark”, Summer Walker and Usher’s “Come Thru” over Blackstreet’s “Don’t Leave Me”.
Halfway through the tape we’re treated to SZA’s “I Hate You” over Eve’s “Love Is Blind”, but the standout remix has to be Tem’s “Free Mind” over Aaliyah’s “Rock The Boat”.
If you’re a fan of R&B, Back 2 The Future Vol. 1 is one hour of heaven.
