Drake returns to form with an emotional plea to be loved and rescued from his current lifestyle. Here’s SHIFTER’s Kevin Bourne, aka KB The Boss, with his Search & Rescue single review.
It’s Christmas in April for Drake fans as the Toronto rapper and singer recently took to social media to tease a new song. Well, the song, titled “Search & Rescue”, is finally here and it’s a sound we’re not used to hearing from Drake who returns to form with an emotional plea to be loved.
It’s a change in direction from Her Loss which drew criticism for being misogynistic and degrading to women. This change in subject matter is the more mature content some were calling for from the 36 year-old. On the new song Drake is looking for that special someone to take him off the market and rescue him from his current lifestyle.
“Come and rescue mе
Take me out the club, take me out the trap
Take me off the market, take me off the map
I’m tryna hit the group chat and tell ’em it’s a wrap“
Where Drake appeared petty and shallow at times on the 21 Savage collab, he now says, “I need someone to be patient with me” and “They don’t even need to be as famous as me”.
The single includes a sample of Kim Kardashian from her TV show as she was considering divorcing Ye. Leading up to the release, some questioned whether Drake was the latest artist to get the Kendrick x AI treatment. Well, we got our answer. It remains to see whether this will spark another beef between the two rappers or if Drake gave his on-and-off again friends a heads up.
While the song has some autotune which along with the melodies sounds like something out of the NAV and Quavo playbook, overall, this song is refreshing given Drake’s material over his last two albums. We know Drake can give us hits in his sleep, but he’s at his best when he gives us honest emotion; songs that are the soundtrack for our late night drives around the city. With this song, it’s sounds as though Drake is being truthful and authentic, and had something to get off his chest. Adding to the intimacy of the track is the instrumentation which includes keys and the odd synth.
This song may or may not be a big commercial success, but it’s the honest emotion fans have come to love from Drake, wrapped in a repeat worthy sound we haven’t heard from him before. While many of us love hitmaking Drake, or even toxic Drake, this is the version we need more of. This is Drake showing us he is capable of real artistry. Although it may not resonate with listeners at first listen, the song is simply amazing.
