“Too modest for the big city (Toronto) and too provocative for the African homes they come from, virgins! is a comedic drama that follows four 20-something year-old women awkwardly navigating adulthood, love, and relationships as virgins, while dodging the all-seeing aunties along the way.” -CBC
Rife with late nights, girl talk, and the tug of war struggle of balancing family expectations with society’s, Canadian series virgins! is a must-watch new drama series on CBC Gem.
Created and written by Aden Abebe, virgins! features four East African women in their prime years as they navigate relationships, religion, and workplace politics. Too haram to be halal and too halal to be haram, the lead actors discover themselves as they navigate new experiences as young adult virgins.
Set in Toronto, the cast features East-African Canadian talents: Hosaena Mesfin who plays study-hard intellectual Aby, Nasra Adem who plays Amina, the aspiring queer actress stuck in her role as a sexual-education worker, Blane Solomon who plays church-goer Delina balancing her hectic work life with church, family, and boys, and Nadia Hussein who plays the family-favourite saint, Sara.
With striking relatability, the quartet may just become your fictional besties. Balancing modesty and morals with temptations and trouble, the friends shed light on the very real pressures of being the model child in immigrant families. The dramatic comedy is an exciting evolution of the Black media scene in Toronto, casting the spotlight on the talent right at home.
