It’s been three months since the release of Queenyy’s last single “What I Like About You”, but fans of the soulful Canadian hip-hop and R&B singer-songwriter won’t have to wait any longer.
Monday at midnight, Queenyy celebrated her birthday by surprising fans with the release of her brand new single “That Way”. The single comes just ahead of her upcoming EP set to be released this fall.
While the Ottawa-based Queenyy has made sure to keep our appetites whet dropping singles over the past year, “That Way” is Queenny as we’ve never heard her before. Recorded in London, England, it’s an international affair foreshadowing her growing global ambitions.
“I spent pretty much the whole summer in London last year. I started in L.A. then spent two weeks in London in July, did some travelling in Europe, and then went back to London for pretty much all of August into September”, Queenyy says.
The single was recorded at a studio inside of the Broadway Theatre in Barking, London with British producer and engineer Marcus Damon.
“Marcus started playing me some of his beats and I really connected with this one. I came up with the hook straight away and freestyled some ideas for the verses,” said when asked how the song came together. “Marcus was a pleasure to work with and was able to tell me exactly the vibe he was getting. ‘You’re talking about how you’re an independent woman who’s very focused on her career but the guy you’re with can’t handle it so he constantly needs reassurance’ which, in fact, was very much true at the time and has been a common thing I’ve experienced in the past. So we went with that concept and I finished writing and recorded the two verses.”
Adding to the British flavour on the song was London rapper Aaliyah Mire who features on the track.
“Aaliyah wasn’t present for this session, however, when I returned to Canada, Marcus had a session with Aaliyah and she jumped on the bridge. I loved what Aaliyah did with it and felt that’s exactly what the track was missing. It added that extra flavor”, she added.
“That Way” is available on all major streaming platforms.
