Charmaine drops her new single Borderlines, a heartfelt song and video about her journey, successes and family.
Fresh off being included in SHIFTER and the National Arts Centre’s Innovators & Icons: Popular Music & Variety list, Toronto artist Charmaine is back with a heartfelt single “BORDERLINES”. Known for bangers, big dance choreography, and brash anthems about women’s empowerment, Charmaine peals back the layers, giving fans a closer look into who she is.
“‘BORDERLINES’ tells more of a story about who I am and where I’ve been”, she explains. “I wanted to give listeners more of me. More of Charmaine. Every time I hear this, I tear up because it reminds me of my journey and how far I’ve come. My family is everything to me and I did this all for them…I really hope people will feel where I’m coming from and resonate with it.”
The single comes with a new music video directed by Spencer Edwards and co-directed by Charmaine herself. It shows her surrounded by family as she dons a crown and traditional African dress with her Juno award making an appearance.
Charmaine has had a great journey indeed. She has risen to international success in recent years, garnering over 11.5 million streams globally. In 2021, she was the only Canadian artist included on SoundCloud’s First On SoundCloud and was added to NFL Madden 23’s soundtrack. She also made history by becoming the first woman to win a Juno for “Rap Single of the Year” for her single “BOLD”.
What’s the next big challenge for the Zimbabwe-born artist? Well, she recently decided to go back to her roots as an independent artist after spending the fast few years under a label deal. The new single marks her first release as a newly independent artist. Back in July, she took to social media to announce her new independent label Big Sound Recordz with the goal of growing into becoming an all female label.
