Dip Black
Liu Kang
Release date: September 2, 2019
Filmed by: Quest
Edited by: John John
The video for Dip Black’s Liu Kang was shot over an afternoon in Chinatown in downtown Ottawa. And yes…that’s me making a cameo in the video. Shot and edited by the duo of Quest and John John of Dreamland, the video features familiar sites from the Chinatown neighbourhood, from the royal arch to grocery stores and restaurants. We also get a view of the budding Little Italy skyline. And course, what would the video be without a few scenes from the original Mortal Kombat game, a nice touch from the mind of Quest.
Selekwa
La La Land
Release date: September 12, 2019
Shot and edited by: Goat Vision
What would our monthly local music video roundup be without an entry from Goat Vision Studios? This month they worked with Gatineau artist Selekwa on the video for his latest single “La La Land”. While this video appears to be pretty simple at first, when you look closely, the camera quality and editing are on point. Small details like Selekwa appearing to be floating on air, his mouth going big at times during the video, and the transitions and lighting make this video very visually appealing. Not to be forgotten is fellow Gatineau artist Timal Garnier, who came a close second last month in Video of the Month voting by a mere three votes, who makes a few cameos in the video.
Dynamic
Waitin Round
Release date: September 18, 2019
Directed by: James Harkness
No music video roundup is complete without two time Video of the Month winner Dynamic, aka Ya Favourite Lightskin. Dynamic has been steadily releasing one music video every month since he dropped his latest project On A Quest in collaboration with Gatineau producer Quest. This month’s entry is for “Waitin Round”, the fifth single and visual off the EP. Shot under the Dunbar Bridge, home of Ottawa’s annual House of Paint festival, the video features Ya Favourite Lightskin bossed up in a black fidora and trench coat.
Nathan Miles
Hunnit
Release date: September 19, 2019
Directed by: Lebni and Abraham Thodakee
Edited by: Lebni Thodakee (Heirmanos)
“Hunnit” featuring Nathan Miles is the dopest video on this month’s list. The Heirmanos directed and edited video features Nathan Miles in a space suit, visiting some unidentified planet. We then see him suited up on the cover of a magazine and at a press conference. When it comes to storyline and effects this tops the list for September when it comes to creativity. But what else would you expect from Miles who also happens to be one of the more creative artists in the city?
